Abstract

This work focuses on the role of shoes as a metaphor in the memory of Mapuche Huilliche identity. Memory is approached through autobiographical narratives collected in the book “Vida y Palabra Campesina” published in 1986. It explores how shoes represent a fetish that articulates relationships and helps reflect on the effects of mimetic desire and the social construction of alterity. As exposed here, shoes are not separate from the intricate visual and social codes that could only be constructed with the arrival of clothing and its meanings.
