Occupational therapy and the use of virtual reality games in treatment with elderly people
Abstract
Virtual Reality games can be used as a therapeutic resource for the prevention and treatment of problems arising from aging. The aim of this study was to understand, based on the literature, how virtual reality has been used in the treatment of the elder people and to reflect upon the interface of this resource with Occupational Therapy. This was a qualitative study of the integrative bibliographic review type, considering the following categories that guided the discussion: situations in which games are more used in the treatment of elder people; applicability of games; effectiveness of virtual reality treatment with the elderly. The results of the studies pointed out that virtual reality games are as or more effective than conventional occupational therapy treatment, and can work the motor and cognitive skills of the elderly, such as pain improvement, muscle strength, balance, memorization, gait, socialization and leisure.
