Abstract

This study estimates the number of cases of Burnout Syndrome on a sample constituted by 120 bus drivers from Santiago de Chile. In order to evaluate the sample it was applied to them the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS), which is an adaptation of the classic test (MBI-Human Services Survey), used for the health professionals. The results revealed the presence of the syndrome, caracterized by low levels of cynism (56,67%), but high levels of emotional exhaustion (45,83%) and proffesional effectiveness (68,33%), and points out that, on the correlations matrix, the only correlation which was highly significant (p<0,005) was the one among the variables of emotional exhaustion and cynicism (0,345), which allows us to conclude that the cynic and depersonalization attitudes constitute a defense mechanism against emotional exhaustion prompt by the daily job. This shows that the individuals who were evaluated have not presented yet indifference mechanisms, on the contrary they are using their inner jurisdiction and self esteem as defense method, this makes them able to maintain their activities even though they present high levels on professional efficiency. Key words: Burnout Syndrome, Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey (MBI-GS), bus drivers.
