Abstract

Teachers of foreign language aim at developing in their students the four skills, however, this is not often achieved and one may wonder, which is the cinderella of the four: listening, reading, speaking or writing? Furthermore, there is a long-standing belief that there is a direct correlation between language proficiency and writing skills. Moreover, it is also doubtful that prewriting can exert much influence in the acquisition of writing skills. Has anybody ever wondered about the importance of a writing prompt, about the parts and characteristics of a writing prompt? Has a second thought been given to the purposes of assigning writing prompts? Scott’s philosophy of the writing assignment and the criteria for preparing composition assignments as well as some examples of flawed and successful writing prompts can help foreign language teachers do a better job when teaching writing in a foreign language.
